About the studio

Founded on restraint.

Céline Marchand pinning images to a linen mood board in the sunlit Maison Ardoise studio

Maison Ardoise was founded by Céline Marchand in 2014 with a simple conviction: the most luxurious homes are the calmest ones.

Raised in Lyon, Céline trained in architecture before spending eight years restoring apartments in Paris, where she learned to read a room's proportions before touching its finishes. She moved to the Hudson Valley in 2013 and opened the studio on Warren Street a year later.

Today the studio is a small team of designers working between Hudson and Paris. We take on a limited number of homes each year — new builds, restorations and the occasional country house — and Céline leads every one personally.

Ardoise is French for slate: the dark, durable stone of old rooftops. It is our reminder to choose materials that weather beautifully.

Approach

Three principles

Light first

We study how sun moves through a home across a full day before choosing a single colour. Every decision follows the light.

Honest materials

Lime plaster, solid oak, stone, wool and linen. Materials that age, mark and soften — and look better for it.

Edit, then edit again

Fewer, better pieces, chosen slowly. Rooms should leave space for the things you will collect over a lifetime.
